Bored retiree creates supersized household objects 09.04.2026

Steve Wainwright, a 62-year-old retired engineer from Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, has found an inventive way to combat boredom by creating supersized replicas of everyday household objects. Since retiring in 2020 from the East of England Ambulance Service, Wainwright has built over 20 items, including a 13-amp plug, a clothes peg, and a 13-amp plug, each approximately ten times their normal size. These creations, made from wood, metal, and plastic in his garden workshop, have cost around £2,500 and can take up to two weeks to complete. Some have been repurposed as functional furniture, like a giant tape measure coffee table. Wainwright's wife, Cat Thompson, supports his hobby, which has also found an audience at charity events, particularly with blind individuals who enjoy the tactile experience. His five-foot-long HB pencil is a public favorite, and some of his work will be displayed at Peterborough Cathedral in September.
