Mamdani taps ex-Biden official to audit NYPD, other agencies for sanctuary law lapses 1d ago

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has appointed Bitta Mostofi, a former Biden administration official, to audit six municipal agencies for sanctuary law compliance, aiming to counter federal immigration crackdowns. Mostofi, now a special adviser, will examine protocols at agencies including the NYPD and Department of Correction, identifying loopholes and potentially recommending stricter penalties for violations. This initiative follows findings that employees under former Mayor Eric Adams violated sanctuary laws by sharing information with federal immigration authorities. The audits, which began February 6 and require reports by May 7, are intended to strengthen immigrant protections and address confusion left from the previous administration, despite potential friction with President Trump's administration.
