Breda discrimineerde niet: frustratie en onbegrip bij woonwagenbewoners 18.02.2026

Bart and Leonie Hülters, representing Stichting Woonwagenbelangen, expressed deep disappointment after the College voor de Rechten van de Mens dismissed their discrimination complaint against the municipality of Breda. The couple alleged that an official told them they were not entitled to a vacant plot of land next to their camp on Gageldonkseweg because Bart is a caravan dweller. They sought to expand their living space to be closer to family, a plan they believe was hindered by discriminatory practices, especially as zoning changes were made for social housing apartments during the same period. The College ruled that the context of the official's remark could not be definitively established, suggesting it might have been a policy explanation, thus failing to legally prove discrimination. This outcome, coupled with Leonie's absence during the hearing due to illness, left the Hülters feeling the decision was unjust and that their arguments were not adequately considered, despite their belief that clear evidence of discrimination exists.
