Britain seeks views before it drops the hammer on signal jammers 10.04.2026

The Register

The UK government, through the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), is initiating a four-week call for evidence to inform legislation aimed at banning radiofrequency signal jammers. This move expands beyond concerns about car thefts, now encompassing threats to home security systems, critical public infrastructure like cell towers, and positioning, navigation, and timing systems, which could cost the economy an estimated £7.62 billion. While the Wireless Telegraphy Act 2006 currently bans possession, proving use is difficult. The upcoming Crime and Policing Bill will address car thefts facilitated by jammers, but this evidence gathering will shape future broader legislation. The government has been aware of jammers as a crime issue since at least 2020, with devices previously found disguised as everyday items and linked to significant car theft rates.
