Britons could face higher household bills for years to come, MP warns 09.04.2026

British households may face elevated bills for several years, even with a ceasefire in the Middle East, according to Labour MP Graeme Downie. He warns that prices will not return to normal quickly and the full economic impact could persist until at least 2027/28. The conflict has already affected the price of fertilizers, leading to anticipated increases in food costs, and damage to an LNG plant in Qatar could take years to repair. Public anxiety is high, with 86% concerned about fuel and energy prices and 80% about fuel availability. While the government is taking steps towards energy security, these are long-term solutions and do not address the current crisis. The energy price cap is set to end in July, and fuel duty is scheduled to increase, further impacting household budgets.
