Brothers of pardoned oil scandal mastermind cleared after court finds they were victims of hidden corruption scheme 07.07.2026

A Maltese court has fully acquitted five brothers—Raymond, Antonio, Salvu, Emanuel, and Gaetano Farrugia—of complicity in a massive corruption and bribery scheme involving Enemalta and MOBC. Magistrate Yana Micallef Stafrace ruled that the brothers were victims of their brother, George Farrugia, who used his position as managing director of Power Plan Limited to conduct secret illicit operations. While George claimed his siblings approved the bribes through signed cheques, the court found his testimony "evasive" and "uncorroborated." The brothers testified that George intentionally kept them in the dark regarding the oil business, using their trust to facilitate undocumented cash withdrawals. Consequently, the court dismissed a long-standing freezing order on the brothers' personal assets and properties, concluding the prosecution failed to prove they were accomplices in George's decade-long bribery scheme.
