Burkina Faso bans French TV channel over 'disinformation' 05.05.2026

Burkina Faso's military regime, led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré since his September 2022 coup, has banned French television channel TV5Monde, accusing it of "disinformation" over coverage of jihadist violence in Burkina Faso and neighboring Mali. The High Council for Communication announced the ban on Tuesday, May 5, citing numerous breaches of law, ethics, and professional conduct, including disinformation and glorification of terrorism in news editions from April to May 2024. Council head Wendingoudi Louis Modeste Ouedraogo stated the offenses related to topics on the fight against terrorism and attacks in Mali late last month. This follows previous suspensions of TV5Monde in April and June 2024, and similar actions in Mali, where it was suspended in May 2023 for lacking impartiality.
