A new post-Brexit proposal presented to Labour leader Andy Burnham suggests Britain could rejoin the EU single market by offering to extend its military and nuclear deterrent protection across Europe. The plan, drawn up by former Conservative MP Nick Boles, who quit the party in 2019 over Brexit, proposes the creation of a "European Confederation" that would link the EU single market with NATO's defence commitments. Under the proposal, Britain would commit to spending 3.5% of GDP on defence and extend its nuclear umbrella, including Trident, to non-NATO allies. In exchange, the UK would gain access to the EU's free-trade zone without having to accept controversial terms such as freedom of movement or joining the euro.
