Cameroon parliament votes to create vice president post 05.04.2026

Cameroon's parliament overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment on Saturday, establishing the new post of vice president. The vote saw 200 lawmakers in favor, 18 against, and four invalid ballots, following a debate that commenced Thursday in the capital, Yaounde. This significant change allows the vice president to assume presidential duties upon the president's death, resignation, or incapacity without requiring immediate elections. Opposition leader Maurice Kamto criticized the bill as a power grab, while proponents argue it will enhance institutional stability and leadership continuity for the nation, led by 93-year-old President Paul Biya.
