New research published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine indicates that engaging in 90 minutes to two hours of weight training weekly can significantly reduce the risk of premature death. Analyzing data from three studies involving over 147,000 individuals across 30 years, researchers found that consistent strength training lowered the overall risk of death by 13%. More specifically, it decreased the risk of death from cardiovascular disease by 19% and from neurological diseases by 27%. While aerobic exercise is known for its health benefits, this study highlights the substantial contribution of strength training, particularly when combined with aerobic activity, to healthier aging and reduced strain on healthcare systems.
