Canada looking to beef up forced labour laws as U.S. imposes new tariffs 03.06.2026

Canada's Liberal government plans to introduce new legislation to strengthen its laws against forced labour in supply chains, following a U.S. proposal for a 10 per cent tariff on Canadian goods. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer released a report arguing that Canada, Mexico, the UK, and others are not adequately enforcing bans on forced labour, creating an unlevel playing field for American workers. While Canada already has legislation and CUSMA rules against forced labour, the U.S. report criticized the minimal enforcement actions and called Canada a "dumping ground" for such products. Prime Minister Mark Carney stated the government's commitment to combating forced labour, with the new legislation expected in the coming weeks, and Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc affirmed shared objectives with the U.S. on this issue.
