Canadian Trump critic sues over U.S. bid to ID him 06.05.2026

A Canadian citizen, who anonymously criticizes the Trump administration online, has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in California. The lawsuit alleges that DHS, under Secretary Markwayne Mullin, is attempting to compel Google to reveal the identity and extensive personal information of the plaintiff, who posts under the pseudonym "John Doe." The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), representing the critic, argues this move infringes on free speech and privacy rights, potentially chilling online dissent. The DHS issued an administrative summons to Google seeking details such as the plaintiff's name, address, browsing history, and physical movements, prompting the lawsuit to prevent the release of this data.
