Cape Town collects its own household stats 04.07.2026

The City of Cape Town is initiating its own triennial household surveys to gather current socioeconomic data, independent of Stats SA, to address growing service delivery demands in its rapidly changing urban landscape. This proactive approach aims to provide accurate, suburb-level information crucial for responsive municipal planning, especially amidst inward migration and upcoming local government elections. While acknowledging the value of Stats SA's national census and surveys, the city highlights the limitations of their 10-year frequency and sample-based interim surveys for granular local needs. Cape Town's initiative is designed to complement official statistics, bridging data gaps and offering more frequent, locally relevant insights comparable to national datasets, thereby enhancing decision-making and policy development. Stats SA, while recognizing the need for localized data, emphasizes adherence to national quality standards for any officially recognized statistical collections.
