A Cape Town man, whose identity is withheld to protect the child, has applied for special leave to appeal to the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) after the Western Cape High Court dismissed his challenge to a paternity ruling. The dispute began in 2016 when the child's mother sought paternity clarity in maintenance court, but the relationship dates back to the late 1990s. A 2001 DNA test excluded the man as the father, but the laboratory was not SANAS-accredited. Court-ordered tests in 2017 and 2019 both indicated a paternity probability exceeding 99.9999%.
