Cape Town's first MyCiTi battery-electric bus arrives as part of sustainable transport expansion 07.07.2026

The City of Cape Town has introduced its first MyCiTi battery-electric bus, marking a significant milestone in the expansion of sustainable public transport. As part of a larger initiative to acquire 38 low-floor Volvo BZRLE vehicles, the City aims to transition toward a more resilient and cost-effective network. These 12-metre buses, which feature locally manufactured bodies from Gauteng, will undergo rigorous testing on various routes, including the N2 highway and Polkadraai Road, to evaluate battery life and energy use. This research, conducted in partnership with the University of Cape Town, is essential for refining operational planning before the full fleet rollout. While testing begins immediately, the complete electric fleet is scheduled to enter service by July 1, 2027, specifically connecting Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha with Wynberg, Claremont, and the Cape Town CBD.
