"C'est de la discrimination" : les musulmans d'Aubervilliers attendent leur grande mosquée depuis dix ans 23.02.2026

Muslim residents of Aubervilliers, Seine-Saint-Denis, have been awaiting the construction of a large mosque for over a decade, facing repeated delays and refusals of building permits. The Association Cultuelle des Musulmans d’Aubervilliers (AMA) has been organizing protests every two weeks since January 2026, citing discrimination as the city council has reneged on promises made in 2014 and 2016. The municipality claims the refusals are due to safety and urban planning concerns, but the AMA argues the current two prayer spaces, accommodating 700 and 300 people respectively, are insufficient for the estimated 15,000 practicing Muslims in the city of 85,000 inhabitants. Despite the AMA having secured €1.5 million of the €3 million needed for the project, the city has not scheduled further technical meetings since 2022, leading to frustration and a planned demonstration on March 6, 2026.
