Chad declares national mourning after deadly Boko Haram ambush 07.05.2026

Chad has declared three days of national mourning following a deadly Boko Haram ambush in the Lake Chad Basin on Wednesday, May 6, which resulted in the deaths of two Chadian generals. This incident occurred two days after a prior assault on the Barka Tolorom military base on May 4, where at least 24 soldiers were killed. The government's statement specified the mourning period would run from midnight on Wednesday, May 6, to midnight on Saturday, May 9, honoring the soldiers lost to terrorist attacks. The Lake Chad region, a critical area shared by four countries, has seen increased activity from Boko Haram's JAS faction, despite a previous counteroffensive by Chadian President Mahamat Deby in late 2024 aimed at eradicating the group from Chadian territory.
