The European Union has rejected requests from airlines and airports to postpone the implementation of the new EES biometric control system at the external borders of the Schengen Area. Although aviation industry representatives have warned of potential major crowds and delays at airports in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, and Belgium, Brussels does not plan any further postponement. The new system requires citizens of non-EU countries, including Serbia, to register fingerprints and a facial photograph upon entry. Officials state that only about 20 out of 1,500 border crossings are potentially problematic, and member states have been instructed to take additional measures to expedite the flow. While over 110 million crossings have already been recorded, the system has already enabled the rejection of thousands of travelers due to inadequate explanation of the purpose of travel or exceeding the permitted stay.
