Charges against ultra-orthodox rabbis in Belgium escalate anti-Semitism row with US and Israel 07.05.2026

Belgian prosecutors have charged ultra-orthodox rabbis in Antwerp with unsafe circumcision practices, sparking a significant diplomatic row involving Israel and the United States. The indictments have been strongly condemned by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, who characterized them as an attempt to criminalize Jewish traditions and called for a specific legal framework for ritual circumcisions in Belgium. U.S. Ambassador Bill White echoed these sentiments, labeling the prosecutions a "shameful stain on Belgium" and criticizing what he described as political inaction in finding a resolution. Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever, however, defended the nation's health regulations, asserting that Belgian law supersedes religious practices and emphasizing the need to balance faith with medical safety.
