Chee Hong Tat spars with WP MPs over retroactively validating fees collected by MND's agencies, WP opposes bill 07.05.2026

The Singaporean Parliament debated the Statutes (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill on May 7, 2026, which proposed retroactively validating fees collected by statutory boards under the Ministry of National Development (MND). Workers' Party (WP) Members of Parliament (MPs) voiced strong opposition, questioning the legality of past fee collections which lacked formal legislative prescription. Senior Parliamentary Secretary for National Development, Syed Harun Alhabsyi, argued the fees were collected in good faith for services rendered, including those by BCA, HDB, NParks, and URA, and that the bill aimed to provide future legislative backing. Despite assurances that the fees were not wrongly collected, WP MPs, led by Pritam Singh and Sylvia Lim, voted against the bill, marking their first opposition to a bill in the current parliamentary term, citing concerns about government financial authority and potential extinguishment of restitution claims.
