Childhelp finds that summer holidays increase inequality among children: ‘Becomes painfully clear during circle time’ 07.07.2026

The National Fund Childhelp (Kinderhulp) warns that the summer holidays increase inequality among children in the Netherlands. While many families travel, children living in poverty often experience a lack of opportunities, leading to shame, social exclusion, and mental health issues. According to director Bernique Tool, the gap becomes painfully clear during circle time at school. Since 2021, the demand for financial support for day trips and holidays has increased by 34 percent. Research shows that holidays are often the first thing to be cut by low-income families, while Dutch people will go on summer holiday 21.9 million times this year. To bridge this gap, Childhelp is organizing the 'Summer Fun Action' (Actie Zomerpret), providing assistance to children between the ages of 0 and 21 to enable them to participate in activities and social outings.
