Childhood lost: Children forced into labour at small-scale mines 15.06.2026

In Lwamgasa, Geita Region, Tanzania, poverty is forcing children as young as 13 into hazardous labour in small-scale gold mines. Driven by hunger and lack of family income, these children abandon school to perform physically demanding tasks like breaking rocks and washing ore, earning meager wages of Sh2,000 to Sh5,000 daily. Despite existing laws prohibiting child labour in mining, enforcement is undermined by economic hardship, leaving children with no alternatives for survival. While authorities, including Minerals Commissioner Abdulrahman Mwanga, claim to be intensifying inspections and enforcing penalties like license revocation for operators, the persistent reality on the ground reveals children continuing to sacrifice their education and childhoods. Parents also face immense pressure, with some withdrawing children from school due to the inability to provide basic necessities like food.
