The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) has reported a sharp rise in children and young people, aged six to 17, attending A&E units in England due to mental health crises. Analysis of NHS England data, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, shows 75,491 attendances in 2025, up from 55,525 in 2019—a 36% increase. This far outpaces the overall 8% rise in A&E attendances. The cases include self-harm, eating disorders, and emotional crises, with some of the largest increases seen in children aged six to nine. More than 6,200 patients (8%) waited over 12 hours in A&E.
