China bans four New Zealand lawmakers over visit to Taiwan 04.06.2026

China has imposed a one-year travel ban on four New Zealand lawmakers – Laura McClure, David Wilson, Maureen Pugh, and Duncan Webb – for their visit to Taiwan in May, a move described by Beijing as a disregard for its "serious concerns" and "resolute opposition." The Chinese embassy in Wellington stated the visit caused "serious adverse political impacts" and sent "wrong signals" to Taiwan's ruling party, constituting interference in China's internal affairs. New Zealand's Foreign Minister expressed surprise, noting that such visits had historically been unproblematic, and has requested discussions with Chinese authorities. Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the ban, asserting the legitimacy of parliamentary diplomacy. One of the banned lawmakers, Laura McClure, called the ban "foreign interference" and refused to apologize. Australia has also expressed concern and plans to raise the issue with China.
