China hands two former defense ministers suspended death sentences 07.05.2026

China's military court has imposed suspended death sentences on two former defense ministers, Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu, for corruption. The sentences, reported on Thursday, May 7, by state media, are the most severe handed down to high-ranking military officials during President Xi Jinping's extensive anti-corruption drive. Both ministers, who were also former members of the Central Military Commission and served between 2018 and 2023, will have their sentences commuted to life imprisonment after a two-year period. They were convicted of bribery offenses and have been permanently stripped of their political rights and personal property.
