China-Japan flights to drop 57% in summer travel peak amid geopolitical tensions 25.06.2026

Aviation intelligence firm OAG reports that 2,629 round-trip flights are scheduled between China and Japan for July 2026, down sharply from 6,317 in July 2025, with August showing a similar decline to 2,641 from 6,127. The cuts, tracked across 23 airlines, represent a 57% reduction during the peak summer travel season. OAG Asia head Mayur Patel noted that geopolitical challenges continue to impact travel patterns, and current demand aligns with planned capacity. Chinese carriers, including the three largest state-owned airlines, are leading the reductions, while Japanese airlines have kept their schedules mostly unchanged to maintain hub connectivity to North America.
