China sentences official to death for taking $325m in bribes 07.07.2026

A court in Changzhou, eastern China, has sentenced 69-year-old former Nanjing official Yang Youlin to death for accepting over 2.2 billion yuan ($325 million) in bribes. Between 1993 and 2023, Yang exploited his various positions to facilitate engineering contracts, land transfers, and financing in exchange for massive illegal gains. He was also convicted of embezzlement, money laundering, and abuse of power, committing offenses deemed of an extremely serious nature. This sentencing is part of President Xi Jinping's ongoing anti-corruption crackdown targeting high-level officials. While death sentences for white-collar crimes are rare, they are typically applied in cases involving sums exceeding 1 billion yuan. Although Yang pleaded guilty and expressed remorse, the court ruled that his cooperation with authorities was insufficient to warrant a more lenient punishment or a commuted life sentence.
