China's Spring Festival travel rush passes halfway mark with 5.08 bln trips 22.02.2026

China's 2026 Spring Festival travel rush, known as chunyun, has surpassed its halfway mark as of Saturday, Feb. 21, with a total of 5.08 billion inter-regional passenger trips recorded in the first 20 days, according to the Ministry of Transport. Road travel constitutes the largest portion with 4.76 billion trips, followed by railways with 258 million. Waterways and civil aviation contributed 19.99 million and 47.52 million trips, respectively. This annual migration, considered the world's largest, is projected to reach a record 9.5 billion inter-regional passenger trips over the entire 40-day period, which spans from Feb. 2 to March 13.
