Chornobyl at 40: Settlers and horses survive Russian drones, contamination 24.04.2026

In the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone (CEZ) near Ukraine's border with Belarus, a deceptive calm persists despite ongoing threats from Russian drones and missiles launched from across the border, coupled with the lingering legacy of intense radioactive contamination from the 1986 nuclear disaster. The 30km diameter zone, once established to contain contamination, has become militarized since Russia's February 24, 2022 invasion, adding further restrictions to this hazardous environment. Nevertheless, four decades after the catastrophe, small communities of scientists, elderly residents who have returned, and soldiers are coexisting within the abandoned structures and thriving wildlife of the CEZ.
