Chwakwera delivers Commonwealth's message to Samia as envoy concludes working visit 15.04.2026

On Wednesday, April 15, 2026, President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania met with Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, Special Envoy of the Commonwealth Secretary-General and former Malawi President, at State House in Dar es Salaam. Dr. Chakwera delivered a special message from Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, detailing the organization's priority areas for engagement with Tanzania. These include transparency and cooperation in assessing post-2025 General Election developments, enhancing political participation, promoting inter-party dialogue, and strengthening institutional accountability. Ms. Botchwey affirmed the Commonwealth's commitment to supporting Tanzania's democratic governance, rule of law, and national reconciliation efforts, offering assistance through dialogue and institutional reforms. President Hassan outlined Tanzania's approach, including the establishment of an independent Commission of Inquiry to restore stability and accountability, with its findings to guide future actions and reforms. Dr. Chakwera concluded his working visit, aimed at assessing the political environment and reconciliation efforts, reiterating the Commonwealth's readiness to collaborate with Tanzania.
