Code rood in meerdere deelstaten Mexico, straten Guadalajara 'uitgestorven' 23.02.2026

A state of "code red" has been declared in multiple Mexican states, including Jalisco, following the death of drug lord "El Mencho," leader of the Jalisco cartel. The second-largest city, Guadalajara, has become a ghost town with streets deserted, businesses closed, and public transport halted. This unrest has spread to neighboring states like Colima, Michoacán, Nayarit, Guanajuato, and Tamaulipas, where cartel members have set vehicles and buildings ablaze and blocked highways. Videos of panic at Guadalajara's airport and smoke rising over Puerto Vallarta have circulated online. Schools remain closed, and residents are advised to stay indoors. The US reportedly played a role in El Mencho's apprehension.
