Colosio Case: Court orders release of former Cisen agent accused of being the "second shooter" 07.07.2026

The First Collegiate Court of Appeals based in Toluca has ordered the release of Jorge Antonio Sánchez Ortega, a former Cisen agent, after determining that the criminal action for the murder of Luis Donaldo Colosio has expired after 12 years. The ruling revoked the pretrial detention order issued in November 2025 by the Fourth District Court in the State of Mexico. The magistrates noted that the Attorney General's Office (FGR) lacked sufficient evidence to prove Sánchez Ortega's involvement, thereby discrediting the "second shooter" theory reactivated by former Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero. The case, related to the events of March 23, 1994, in Tijuana, is legally closed, allowing only for appeals by the Colosio family, who have previously requested the release of Mario Aburto Martínez.
