Commissioner denies ‘EU FBI’ as Europol gets power to prod states into criminal probes 25.06.2026

The European Commission has insisted it is not building an "EU FBI" after tabling a new law that strengthens Europol’s role in cross-border crime fighting. Home Affairs Commissioner Magnus Brunner told European lawmakers on Thursday (25 June) that the agency will not gain its own investigative competences, repeating "We don’t want Europol to become a European FBI." However, the proposed legislation, the third reform of Europol in six years, includes Article 11, which empowers the agency’s executive to request that EU member states initiate a criminal investigation. Capitals must then examine the request as a matter of priority and reply within one month. If they refuse, they must provide reasons.
