Commonwealth announces new step toward making U.S. fusion real 28.04.2026

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has taken a significant step towards commercializing fusion power by formally filing a request with PJM, a major grid operator, to connect its planned fusion power plant in Virginia. This marks the first instance of a fusion developer submitting such a detailed request for grid interconnection, signifying a transition from the scientific phase to real-world application. The process, which has involved over a year of discussions with PJM, will involve rigorous vetting of CFS's plans for commercial power generation, anticipated in the early 2030s. CFS, working with Dominion Energy, aims to produce 400 megawatts from its ARC reactor near Richmond and already has a power purchase agreement with Google for half its output.
