The Comptroller General of the Republic has identified 74 critical points in the rivers of Piura that require urgent cleaning and dredging to mitigate the effects of the El Niño Costero phenomenon. Luis Castillo Torreba, spokesperson for the oversight body, noted that these points are part of more than 2,016 critical zones detected nationwide. According to the National Water Authority, the Piura region could suffer impacts across more than 40,000 hectares. Additionally, the head of Indeci in Piura, Omar Ramírez, warned that 20 of the region's 65 districts face a very high risk of flooding, endangering 400,000 people. Given this situation, local governments have been urged to make budgetary modifications to fund prevention activities and avoid disasters during the upcoming rainy season.
