Constitutional reforms: Special JS committee formed, opposition walks out 14.07.2026

The formation of a special parliamentary committee to recommend constitutional amendments has deepened political uncertainty, as opposition MPs walked out in protest, insisting that reforms be carried out through a council outlined in the July charter. Chief Whip Nurul Islam proposed the 17-member committee, with 12 members from the ruling alliance and five seats reserved for the opposition, to recommend amendments before the House. The proposal was passed by voice vote after the opposition declined to nominate members and staged a walkout. Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed will head the committee, which includes several BNP and allied party MPs.
