Contraception injectable : pourquoi si peu de femmes y ont recours chaque année ? 23.02.2026

A recent Epi-Phare study in France reveals that injectable contraception, specifically Depo Provera®, is used by approximately 4,400 women annually, with a significant portion originating from disadvantaged backgrounds and overseas territories. Despite its potential for improved adherence compared to daily pills, only 16.7% of users continue with the quarterly injection after one year, and 15.5% after two years. This low long-term usage is attributed to the method's constraints and frequent side effects, and is considered reassuring given the increased risk of meningioma with prolonged use. The study, which analyzed data from 2010 to 2023, also identified general practitioners as the primary prescribers of this contraceptive method.
