Contractor fined £110k after falling stone killed man 13.03.2026

FP McCann Limited, a quarrying and construction firm, has been fined £110,000 at Antrim Crown Court for a health and safety offence following the death of subcontractor William Houston. The incident occurred on 25 April 2023, at FP McCann's Loughside Quarry in Larne, County Antrim, when a 45kg stone fell from a raised conveyor catwalk and struck Mr. Houston, who later died in hospital on 10 May. The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) investigated the death, which the court deemed foreseeable despite the company's late guilty plea. Judge Sandra Crawford highlighted the devastating impact on Mr. Houston's widow, Patricia, and noted that while the company has since improved its safety measures, inadequate steps were taken to mitigate obvious risks.
