The historic Boconnoc Estate in Cornwall, linked to Prime Minister Lord Grenville, has been saved from a substantial £1.2 million inheritance tax bill due to a clerical error. The Fortescue family, descendants of Lord Grenville's nephew, faced the massive tax demand after matriarch Elizabeth Fortescue mistakenly transferred a life interest in estate properties, valued at £4.4 million, to her daughter Claire. This blunder threatened the centuries-old estate, which has been a family seat since 1864 and underwent a significant 12-year restoration project. A High Court judge has now ruled to reverse the process, preventing the need to sell off parts of the estate to meet the tax obligation and averting "grave and unintended tax consequences."
