Could cancer vaccines be next? New treatment cuts melanoma risk by nearly 50% 02.06.2026

A personalized mRNA cancer therapy, intisemran autogene, when combined with the immunotherapy drug KEYTRUDA, has demonstrated a significant reduction in melanoma recurrence or death. Presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting on May 27, data from the phase 2b KEYNOTE-942 study, with a five-year follow-up, showed a 49% decreased risk for patients with high-risk stage 3 and 4 melanoma whose tumors were surgically removed. This combination therapy, a collaboration between Merck and Moderna, works by teaching the immune system to recognize cancer cells. The treatment is reported to be well-tolerated with manageable side effects, and is now undergoing evaluation in a phase 3 study.
