Counterfeit risk in Kenya: Seizures vs consumer awareness 07.07.2026

Kenya is facing a significant surge in counterfeit goods, primarily driven by the rapid transition toward digital sales platforms. According to data from the Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA), over 30 per cent of counterfeit items are now sold online, allowing them to bypass traditional physical inspection methods. This shift has caused the value of seized counterfeits to escalate dramatically over the last five fiscal years. While seizures were valued at under 200 million shillings in 2020/21, they skyrocketed to over 550 million shillings by the 2025/26 financial year. Despite this aggressive increase in illicit trade, public awareness has remained largely stagnant. Consumer awareness, which stood at just over 50 per cent in 2020/21, has failed to grow significantly, leaving a substantial portion of the population unprotected against the evolving digital threat.
