An appellate court in New York has affirmed a judgment requiring former National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre to repay $4.3 million for misappropriating funds and has upheld a 10-year ban preventing him from serving as an NRA officer or director. This decision supports the lawsuit filed in 2020 by New York Attorney General Letitia James, who alleged that LaPierre and other NRA leaders violated New York charities laws through self-dealing and mismanagement of funds for personal benefits like private jets and vacations. The court rejected LaPierre's claim that the lawsuit was retaliatory, stating the Attorney General had probable cause due to pre-existing reports of malfeasance. LaPierre resigned from the NRA in January 2024, prior to a jury's February 2024 finding of financial mismanagement against the organization and LaPierre's corrupt leadership.
