Court Orders SERAP To Pay DSS Operatives ₦100m For Defamation 05.05.2026

Justice Halilu Yusuf of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has ordered the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) to pay ₦100 million in damages to two Department of State Services (DSS) operatives, Sarah John and Gabriel Ogundele. The court ruled that SERAP defamed the officers by falsely claiming they unlawfully invaded its Abuja office on September 9, 2024. In addition to the damages, SERAP must issue public apologies across two national newspapers, two television stations, its website, and its Twitter handle. The court also awarded ₦1 million for litigation costs and imposed a 10 percent annual post-judgment interest rate. This ruling concludes a high-profile defamation suit, finding that SERAP’s public allegations were untrue and damaging to the officers' professional reputations.
