Cyprus wants 85,000 electric vehicles by 2030, but how? 05.07.2026

Cyprus aims to have 85,000 electric vehicles on its roads by 2030, requiring approximately 15,000 new annual registrations. While the nation currently holds one of the lowest electric vehicle adoption rates in the EU at 0.77 percent, recent data shows growth, with battery electric vehicles reaching a 4.7 percent market share in 2025. Despite this progress, significant hurdles remain, including a lack of coherent policy, inconsistent government subsidies, and consumer uncertainty regarding future grants. While charging infrastructure is expanding through private operators and new building regulations, experts highlight challenges such as high upfront costs, limited access to affordable used EVs due to import laws, and the need for electrical upgrades in older homes. Achieving the 2030 target will require a comprehensive policy approach encompassing infrastructure expansion, clearer financial incentives, and increased public education to facilitate the transition toward sustainable mobility.
