Cyprus, France sign defence agreement to deepen military cooperation 08.06.2026

Cyprus and France solidified their defense ties on Monday by signing a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) in Nicosia, facilitating enhanced military cooperation and the potential positioning of French troops on Cypriot soil. Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas and his French counterpart Catherine Vautrin finalized the deal, which establishes a legal framework for military personnel exchanges and activities between the two nations. This agreement builds upon a December strategic partnership and underscores Cyprus's role as a stability pillar in the Eastern Mediterranean, with France viewing the island as a crucial hub for its regional military operations. The SOFA aims to deepen interoperability amidst increasing regional instability and bolsters European defense initiatives.
