Freedom has a cost d day veteran tells normandy children 08.06.2026

American D-Day veteran Irving Locker, aged 101, returned to Normandy to commemorate the 82nd anniversary of the Allied landings, visiting local schools and remembrance ceremonies. Locker, who landed on Utah Beach on June 6, 1944, with the 116th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion, shared his message with schoolchildren that "freedom comes at a cost," emphasizing the sacrifices made by those who died. His visits are part of an effort to preserve wartime memories as veteran numbers dwindle, a sentiment echoed at the British Normandy Memorial where 98 more names of servicemen killed in the Battle of Normandy were added. Locker, who turns 102 in August, also released a song last year titled "If Freedom Was Free," reflecting his wartime experiences and the importance of remembrance.
