A group of 22 Broadway and former Kennedy Center dancers, calling themselves "Firstamendmenttroop," staged a protest performance titled "ResistDance" outside the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. on Monday. The choreography, created by director Bryan Buckley and set to music by Rhiannon Giddens, aimed to commemorate two non-violent protesters killed by immigration agents in Minneapolis in January and to denounce the White House's immigration policies and perceived brutal tactics of immigration police. The performance was interrupted by 23 police officers who cited a ban on demonstrations on federal property. White House Communications Director Steven Cheung dismissed the protest as "lame" and "corny." The troupe had previously performed the full choreography at the Lincoln Memorial.
