Data center will use as much diesel as 1,600 cars 03.07.2026

The American technology giant Edgeconnex is building one of Norway's largest data centers in Fyresdal municipality. The facility, which will have a capacity of 365 megawatts, is to be powered by hydropower, but will nonetheless have significant greenhouse gas emissions. According to an emissions application that E24 has gained access to, the data center will have 176 diesel-powered emergency generators that must be tested almost every weekday. The testing regime entails that at least three generators are run simultaneously for 1.5 to 3 hours, totaling 449 test hours per year. This will consume approximately 968,000 liters of diesel annually, equivalent to the emissions from 1,600 diesel cars.
