Deadly hantavirus cruise ship outbreak ‘caused by birdwatching trip’ 07.05.2026

Health officials are investigating a potential link between a Dutch couple's bird-watching trip to a landfill site in Ushuaia, Argentina, and an outbreak of hantavirus on the cruise ship MV Hondius. The couple may have contracted the virus from rodents during their outing, leading to eight suspected cases on board, five of which are confirmed. The ship, which sailed from southern Argentina, was en route to the Canary Islands, though it was initially blocked from docking in Tenerife. Two individuals who returned to the UK from the ship have been advised to self-isolate as a precautionary measure, with UKHSA stating the risk to the general public remains very low.
