Delhi hotel fire: Locals turn saviours amid wails, screams, burning bodies 03.06.2026

On Wednesday, June 3, 2026, a devastating fire erupted at a five-story bed-and-breakfast hotel in Delhi's Hauz Rani area around 8:30 a.m., quickly spreading across three floors. Local residents, including Riyazuddin and Mohammed Israr Khan, acted heroically as saviours, improvising rescues before official fire tenders arrived. They used mattresses to cushion falls from windows and physically pulled trapped occupants, many of whom were foreign nationals on medical visas seeking treatment near Max Hospital. The building's lack of emergency exits and accessible windows severely hampered rescue efforts, leading to intense conditions where rescuers faced thick smoke, screams, and even burning bodies, with several volunteers and police collapsing from smoke inhalation.
